Springing out of a crack in the sheer face of spectacular Tashan (‘tower mountain’) the Tashan Falls is one of Taiwan’s most unusual waterfalls. Visible only from a distance, it’s easily reached as part of the Titanic Rock trail from Laiji village. Allow 3 hours or so for the return hike from the trailhead (more if you have to walk up the road from the checkpoint near the village; minivans can be hired to cut the walk along the approach road to the trailhead).

The area suffered badly from recent typhoons, and the Titanic Rock trail is still closed in late 2013, although locals say the trail should reopen in 2014
